[Appreciated]

Monday marked the start of teacher appreciation week, May 6, 2013- May 10, 2013. Three years in the game, not only has my school not celebrated this joyous week honoring America’s troops at the front line of education, but my students probably have the slightest awareness that this week even exists. Am appreciated? Although I may not get a Pinterest made gift from each of my 90+ students or have parents lined up at my door to volunteer and donate school supplies, I like to think that my rapport with parents and families speaks louder than words.

Rita Pierson not only motivates and encourages, but has reminded me of the power of quality teaching. Although we are constantly faced with pressure from the board about test scores and student growth, the root of good teaching is through strong relationships with our children to foster self-esteem, confidence, and academic achievement. Every kid really does need a champion. Who better than a teacher?
